Latvia: Company fined for planning to import Russian-origin birch plywood

In May, the Latvian State Forestry Service (VMD) imposed a 10,000 euro fine on a company that planned to import birch plywood from Turkey, the real country of origin of the wood might be Russia, the State Forestry Service informed. The company also received an additional penalty - a one-year ban on using the right to put birch plywood on the market. The penalty was imposed for legality checks that did not meet the requirements of the Timber Regulation of the European Union (EU), allowing the risk that timber of Russian origin is placed on the market ...
